mythbusting, as told by james miao

as one of the fine gentlemen behind thesixtyone, i've come to appreciate the art of rumorology since we unveiled our latest release two weeks ago.

rumor #1: thesixtyone is run by venture capitalists.  hilariously false. however, if you know a "venture capitalist" with great taste and an affinity for working out of a living room while munching on chex mix, please let me know. we're hiring.

rumor #2: thesixtyone hates bach people.  we actually love bach, especially yo-yo ma's performance of the six unaccompanied cello suites. we do dislike spammers and bots, though.

rumor #3: james miao's 6'3 frame is the result of a chinese conspiracy to compete in olympic basketball.  no comment.

saves and playlists

thanks for all of the bug reports!  we've set a new company record for code commits per minute!  :)

many have brought up concerns over saved songs, and i just realized that i didn't do a good job explaining this.

- the concept of "saved" songs is evolving to an organized playlist system.

- your tags have been converted to playlists

- we still have your saved songs list in our database. to convert them over to the new site, please visit https://old.thesixtyone.com and tag the songs you'd like to keep.

- you can now feature an entire playlist on your profile page. check out "i want that purple stuff" on http://www.thesixtyone.com/james/

a few notes:

- it may take some time for all artist/song pages to be updated with high resolution images and lyrics.

- taglists have been converted to playlists (edit: it may take a few hours for your playlists to fully migrate over).

- we're overhauling our musical taxonomy. "genres" will eventually be removed, but, for the time being, you can find the genre selector in your settings.

- try "open mic."  it's a fabulous way to embark on a music adventure!

- discussion is more centered around actual songs...afterall, this is a music site!  we'll be taking song commenting to new heights over the next few weeks.

- groups are now "channels."  more on this to come.

- you can access the "old" site for a limited time at old.thesixtyone.com (edit: https://old.thesixtyone.com)

- hey, where did the banner ads go?!?  a belated christmas gift to y'all.  :)

we're already hard at work on some improvements and bugfixes, so please let us know if you run into any issues.

have fun!

thesixtyone revisited

Media_httpbimagehostorg0806bobdylanhighway61revisitedfrontaljpg_jegaxvjqhhuhyxu

thesixtyone was founded on the observation that there are thousands of great songs made every year that never get the chance to be heard by the people who would love them.

Sam and I were absolutely bewildered that the internet hadn't done much for independent music nearly a decade after Napster, so we challenged ourselves to create a new kind of online community that would make it easier to bring artists and audiences together.  Our unique design philosophy and the decision to be people-driven meant we'd be venturing into unexplored territory that would need lots of experimentation and iteration.

Twenty-two months after releasing thesixtyone out of Sam's bedroom to a handful of friends, we've been blown away by how much we've learned about things like inflation, listening habits, the meaning of popularity, herd behavior, etc.  Perhaps the most significant point, however, is that thesixtyone's learned what it wants to be when it grows up.

With that, we're proud to announce thesixtyone revisited, our first major release since launch and the next step towards nurturing the best place for independent music on the web.  We're refining our features and approach, so here's some of the things you can expect:

While there's still a lot of work left to be done, we feel we're finally at the point where there's enough clarity in our roadmap to share this news with you all.  Testing began with a limited set of users earlier this month and the plan is to gradually roll it out as we approach December.

Happy Thanksgiving!

fixing an exploit

a minority of listeners have been abusing the search results page to monopolize newly uploaded songs and gain an unfair advantage over other users.  we've since released a small update to close the exploit and return balance to the force.  :P

on that note, we'd like to ask you all to please let us know if you've found an exploit or vulnerability on thesixtyone.  we understand that it can be tempting to keep it to yourself (omg unlimited reputation!), but these type of things only ruin the site for you and everyone else.  slower page loads, reduced audio performance, and unfair reputation gains...not fun and definitely not in the spirit of enjoying new music.

thanks for helping us ensure that thesixtyone remains a great experience for everyone!

hope y'all are enjoying the weekend,
